Using Project Management as a Tool for Career Progression

The 15th edition of the Namibia Careers Expo, recently held in Windhoek, gathered learners and young professionals to explore future career paths led by a lineup of experts across various fields.

Among the featured speakers was Lineekela Hamutumwa, a Project Manager at Monasa Advisory and Associates. As part of the company’s mandate to empower youth through education, Hamutumwa delivered a presentation on how project management serves as a powerful advantage for career progression.

Hamutumwa encouraged the learners to view project management not only as a career path but also as a skillset that strengthens any profession.

“In a world full of smart people, the question becomes, how do you stand out from the crowd? The answer, I believe, is project management. It is the skill that quietly transforms employees into leaders, and whether you want to be a doctor, an engineer, a business owner, a teacher, or an artist, the principles we are going to discuss today apply universally to what you do,” she remarked.

She highlighted three qualities that make project management a driver of professional growth. According to Hamutumwa, these qualities transform individuals into leaders rather than doers, encouraging them to view responsibilities as projects requiring planning, coordination, and solutions.

Secondly, it helps professionals develop essential human skills such as emotional intelligence, collaboration, and execution ability, qualities that remain critical even in an increasingly automated and AI-driven workplace. Lastly, it enables professionals to build credibility faster, as leading projects and delivering measurable results provide clear evidence of responsibility and impact.

Hamutumwa further highlighted the advantages of incorporating project management in any professional environment. “The core of project management is delivering on a promise. When you consistently deliver what you said you would, when you said you would, you build a personal brand of reliability. Trust is the currency of promotion; if leaders trust you to deliver, they will trust you with a bigger team or department,” she stated.

She added that it also strengthens communication and presentation skills, since project managers spend most of their time communicating, therefore learn to tailor their messages or data for the team or high-level summaries for executives.

Hamutumwa stressed that students can begin developing project management skills during their academic journey by taking the lead in group assignments, coordinating tasks, setting timelines, and ensuring accountability, mirroring the responsibilities of a project manager in a professional environment.

She concluded by reminding learners that the most important project anyone will ever manage is their own, encouraging them to set goals and plan how they will achieve them.

“You are essentially the project manager of your own life. You set the goals by deciding where you want to be in five years. You manage the resources, which are your time, energy, and studies. And you ultimately deliver the result, a successful and fulfilling career. If you are not actively managing your own career project, then who exactly is?” she emphasised.
